What is Focaccia Bread?

Focaccia is the Italian pronunciation of [foˈkattʃa]; Ligurian: fougasse [fyˈɡassa] which means a flat Italian bread oven-baked similar to pizza dough.

The main difference between a pizza and focaccia is the quantity of leavening used: Pizza dough uses a small leavening, which makes it very thin and flexible. Focaccia uses more yeast and rises higher than a pizza dough.

Focaccia is a famous Italian bread that has many variations in Italy and abroad. In France, focaccia is known as the popular Fougasse, the same in Spain and many other countries.

Secrets for a successful Focaccia bread

  • The Focaccia dough should be smooth and stretchy.
  • The main secret of Focaccia bread is the dimples created all over the dough. They help to fix the filling and to absorb olive oil which gives it the golden brown color and the crisp texture it has. So, don’t hesitate to play the piano on the soft dough.
  • Before baking the bread in a preheated oven, make sure to add a generous drizzle of olive oil and salt. The Focaccia will be crisp and golden on the top and bottom crusts, and in the inside, it will have a fluffy crumb with lots of air holes.

Store a Focaccia Bread

Focaccia bread is best eaten fresh, but it can be frozen as well. To do so, you need to cut it into slices and then grill it directly in the toaster from the freezer. Adding a drizzle of olive oil will make it taste so fresh.

Serve your Focaccia Bread!

Focaccia is a versatile bread that you can enjoy alone as a snack, as sandwich bread, or as a side to many meals.
